Workplace culture at The Shepherd Group: balance, healthy living and communication

At The Shepherd Group, we’re all about communication. One of the conversations we’re having in recent days is about work-life balance and the importance of healthy living.Because we see TSG as a blank canvas, we are able to actively create and live into our future, experimenting with new methods and approaches. But before we can paint on this canvas, we have to wipe our own slates clean. Our very own Relationship Manager Valerie Samuel articulated this idea when discussing some of her recent breakthroughs.Valerie is passionate about healthy living and she is bringing this mindset to TSG to help Everyone Win. The way Valerie sees it, everyone does not win when we have to miss work because we’re sick or feel tired on the floor because we’re eating improperly. We may talk about showing up and leaving it all on the court, but we cannot show up if we’re not healthy. So how does this relate to work-life balance? For one, we need to see the opportunities for balance and living healthy as we’re engaged at work. In other words, healthy living doesn’t end at the office door. If anything, it means we need to develop consistency to flow through our days. We shouldn’t abandon our impulses toward well-being at work. Instead, we want to bring the best form inside of ourselves and communicate it to our team to help them win. This is also a conversation we can start with our clients. Now, no one likes being told what to do, but we’re not suggesting that. Because we’re forging a relationship with them, we are able to engage on a more personal level. As it is, we already take care of sensitive areas in our clients’ lives. Discussing healthy living is another way to engage and nourish a relationship. There is less distance between our staff and clients, therefore we are empowered to actually converse with our clients as opposed to sticking within the confines of a rigid business transaction. We cannot overemphasize the power of this. Because when you are close enough with your clients to discuss sensitive topics, that relationship is strong. In the meantime, Valerie says her plan for TSG is to educate the team about healthy living. Having conquered her fear of public speaking, she is confident her plan will come to fruition.Do you think we’re onto something here? How do you balance your work and life?
